Entomology is the study of insects. The insect population present on a body or at a crime scene, and the stages of development represented in those populations, can be used to estimate a timeframe for the death of the individual. The study of insects can also be used to infer the movement of a body from one location to another.

Entomology can assist with cases where:

A body has been found, but the time or date of death is not known
It is not clear whether the place where the body has been found is the original deposition location
The body of a person who is missing, presumed murdered, has not been found but insects or insect remains are found in an area where the body might have been stored
A living individual is infested with insects and there is a need to understand whether this might be a result of neglect
